The goal is certainly not to deprive anyone but to enable some. It's just not
tenable for device providers to participate in some sort of "swag arms race" in
order to appease every person. As Quim pointed out a while back, the handouts
of N900s and Lenovo netbooks has created a certain expectation that at some
point is just not realistic. I do enjoy mine but at the same time I understand
if some providers choose not to distribute 800 or so devices for free. Some
companies just won't be able to afford it.

And again: this program does not preclude any alternatives! Please don't
assume that this is the end-all-be-all. Nothing prevents any provider from
setting up another discount or giveway program.
