I have to say I was misled by title "WayLand: A new X server for Linux" of a  
Phoronix's article. I see Kristian's response now, it's a display server not a 
X server.

Wayland won't necessarily replace X11, instead most likely xserver will be 
running on top of it for backward compatibility. But it is still in very early 
stage and things can be changed.

Wayland is indeed still actively developed - but it's somewhat early in
its development. While it's on our radar for the future, for now we go
with a somewhat more traditional, X server based environment (although
our X server is of course not running as superuser anymore - so it's not
THAT "traditional").
