Has someone verified that MeeGo netbook is optimized for Atom? The
fact that people are happily running MeeGo netbook 1.0 on older
Celeron devices (asus eee<=900) with good performance seems to speak
the contrary.

There was one report on either this dev list or the community list where
yum was generating an illegal instruction for someone using a Celeron.
However, that was the only problem they had run into. Everything else
worked fine.

That said, things optimizied for atom may not perform as well as expected
on non-atom hardware because optimizing for atom means optimizing for a
chip that does in-order execution.

also, as we switch compiler versions, the compatibility may be lost in the future. Even an algorithm change in an update may cause the latest version of a package to generate illegal instructions, whereas the older versions could run without issues.
