In addition to usb host and device modes, there is also the USB-OTG (on the
go) standard which allows for the cable to select whether the port is host
or device. the difference being pins 4 and 5 jumped on the host end (USB-A),
and pin 4 removed on the device end (USB-B)

I am not sure if the n900 supports this profile, but I have used it on my
gumstix overo (ARM A8), and have heard of people using it on android phones
like the g1 (which charges over usb).

Yeah according to the (USB Commission Board of choice) if you want to
charge your device over USB, you can't ever provide power over the same
socket (so no host mode), at least that's what I managed to find out.
