Mea culpa,
you are right. My root directory wasn't on sd card root.
so far I have console login and a black screen with a flashing cursor in 
the upper left.

Sounds like your rootfs doesn't contain the /sbin/init binary on the 
second partition
of the sd card.

Did you really _untar_ the data before/while putting it onto the card? Did 
you perhaps
forgot to add the "--strip-components=2" while untaring?

Please make sure that there's a /sbin/init on your card (and of course 
everything
else also).
