You can try and use dbus-monitor (running through sudo or root might
unveil more info) since to my understanding most if not all of the
system events are passed through this message bus.

For instance, running this program on Maemo on the terminal and doing
all sorts of stuff with it shows a wealth of information of what's
happening on the system right now, so you can detect calls, messages,
handset tilts etc...
