What about all of the netbook "look-and-feel" that is currently
provided?  What about the applications that are provided (panel,
banshee, email, calendar, etc.)?  Can all of those really be dropped and
the system still considered "compliant"?

yes. someone can implement their own whole netbook UI and still be compliant.

especially applications are allowed to be replaced; if someone wants to replace, say, the browser with
Firefox, they are completely allowed to do so.
