What does the .desktop file look like? At the very least, you need a Desktop Entry section, containing Name, Executable and Icon fields. Have a look at http://wiki.maemo.org/Desktop_file_format for my best guess at the various fields & their meanings in Maemo desktop files. Application icon become visible and application launch works.
