Much as I hate MfE for being closed source, the losing sync problem (with no error messages) may not be MfE's fault. I have a personal app which uses OWA to synchronise my contacts & events (in kontact) with Exchange. This also loses sync about every week and re-downloads everything. In this case, as it is my code, I can see that OWA is not giving any errors -- it is just telling me that everything has changed since my last sync and everything has to be downloaded again. That is not true but the problem, whatever it is, is at Microsoft's end.
