The JMC260 should just work out of the box with any kernel release since late 2008. The Realtek 8171 should be out of the box for 2.6.38, so at least you only need to do the job once. You should just need gcc and make, there is no C++ in the kernel. It does use other stuff but I'd expect that to be in a basic install.
