Well, I sucessfully compiled MPB on this system with hdf a while ago. But then I asked my root to install it system-wide with MPI and apparently there is a problem with mpi and hdf5 on Irix. So he got stuck halfway and meanwhile my library paths might be messed up. The contents of libhdf5.la looked very odd. Without it it would link and with a naively corrreted version neither. So I guess, I'll just compile and install hdf again and try once more.
