I suspect that the general rule is that we should turn off averaging for any pixel that has (or borders) an epsilon < 1, as otherwise it leads to an instability.

We saw a similar bug report recently where the eps-averaging? causes problems if you include perfect metals.

For now, anyone doing simulations with metals, dispersive or not, is probably well-advised to (set! eps-averaging? false).
