You would probably be better off if you can find a SuSE .rpm file for
HDF5, especially if you are not familiar with installing software under
Unix.
At the very least, you should carefully read the "installation paths"
section of the Meep installation manual.

Note that you will also need to tell Meep where to find the HDF5 header
files, since they are not installed in a system directory. You do this by
setting CPPFLAGS, e.g.
./configure LDFLAGS=-L<...>/lib CPPFLAGS=-I<...>/include
where <...> is the installation location (apparently
/home/cstevens/installers/hdf5-1.6.5/hdf5 in your case), under which there
should be lib/ and include/ subdirectories containing the library and
header files, respectively.
As the Meep manual explains, in general under Unix you have to either
install software into standard locations like /usr or /usr/local, or you
have to tell the compiler (via the configure script) where to find the
software you have installed.
