You're correct that if you look *very* far out along the tails of the gaussian pulse, it's no longer accurate because of numerical precision problems.
However, if you just use the same fcen and df, you aren't looking far out in the tails - you're looking within a standard deviation or two, which should be well within the limits of the numerical precision.
