It looks like this is a bug in the version of h5utils that Debian and Ubuntu used. To get it fixed, they just need to upgrade to a newer version (1.11.1, which fixed a problem about the path for colormaps).
I filed a bug report in the Debian system for this (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=491579 ), but it is listed as a "wishlist" bug because it is just a version upgrade. Probably someone should file a "serious" bug relating to the colormap issue, to try and get the Debian maintainer of this package to pay more attention.
