It looks like this is a bug in the version of h5utils that Debian and
Ubuntu used. To get it fixed, they just need to upgrade to a newer
version (1.11.1, which fixed a problem about the path for colormaps).

I filed a bug report in the Debian system for this
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=491579
), but it is listed as a "wishlist" bug because it is just a version
upgrade. Probably someone should file a "serious" bug relating to the
colormap issue, to try and get the Debian maintainer of this package
to pay more attention.
