I haven't tried the Debian package myself, since it is out of date
(latest version is 1.0.x), but if it doesn't run the example .ctl
files then something is very wrong (either with the Debian package or
with your system, but I think you said that you already tried
reinstalling your system).

I have the impression there's a bug in the meep 0.20.3-x debian
squeeze package. Is there perhaps a way how I can check this and, if
necessary, file a bug report at debian.org?
