David,
Typically an L20B will give a max of 200 hp with a large degree of work. At
this power output it is a race only engine and totally unstreetable. (power
from 5600-8000). With a street setup (mild 288 degree duration cam twin
webers and good head work etc) approx 165-170 hp is acheivable reliably.
An SR20 Naturally Aspirated (non turbo) with cams, forged pistons, and
multiple throttle bodies will achieve 225 230 hp in race trim and 190 -200
in road trim. The SR;s are more expensive to do up from stock. In standard
form with a good ECU and quality extractors 185 - 190 hp is normal with the
engine being turbine like in its smoothness and delivery of large gobs of
torque.
FJ 20's naturally aspirated do not make as much grunt as the SR;s and are
heavier. lt also takes a lot more to get hpout of an FJ in NA form because
of the combustion chamber design, not allowing compression to be raised
much. Although this is not a problem when the engine capacity is raised to
2.4 ltrs as in the FJ24.
A good fuel injection setup (multiple throttle bodies and good ECU) will
cost between $3000 - $7000. (Wolf 3d, multiple throttle bodies fuel pumps
and plumbing, pressure regulator and tuning typically $3000 +), (MOTEC M4,
Motec throttle bodies, loom, pressure regulator, install and tuning approx
$5000 - $7000 depending on options).
You will always be able to get more from a forced induction (turbo or
supercharged) engine than a NA of equivalent capacity, but the costs are
also proportionaly higher. and so is the fun!

Terry gave some good advice to a lister looking at doing a turbo engine, in
that the incidentals cost a lot more than you think. It is more than just
the cost of the original components. Better to do a lesser
power/complicated engine well than have a more powerful/complicated setup
not working well.
Phew! Sorry about being long winded

Cheers
Feral Errol

Hey guys,
i am building a l20 and i wanna know what type of power you guys have
managed to get out of a l20 and what performance parts you have used?, can
the l20 be as fast as it twin cam, turbo counter parts?, is it dear to fit
a turbo to a l20 or supercharger?, what about fitting fuel injection to a
l20?
Also i wanna get myself some dual webers, get 45's? or just a single?

thanks
Leigh
