Michael,Terry,
Thanks for that. I have exactly that problem and I am in the process of tracking down one of those electronic gremlins. After finishing the gearbox transplant. I started the car and tested forwards/reverse in the driveway. Works fine. Put it in the street with the intention of driving it to a mates place later that night. Got in, the engine turns over but no dash lights and no spark from the coil.
If the starter motor cranks over, then the fault is NOT in the primary starting circuit which the start relay is a part off if fitted. A start relay supplies a good voltage and ampere hit direct from the battery and bypasses the amperes going all the way to the ignition switch which with a relay fitted will then only supply the impulse to the relay (as explained in earlier post) to power the solenoid which engages the primary contacts in the starter motor when you turn the key to the start position - nothing more or less than that.
It is more likely your fault will be in the ignition circuit, start at the fuse, ah i think it is #3 down on the LHS if you're facing the back of the car, it is marked "IGN' but on most 70-72 510's this is only a claytons ignition fuse for the alternator reg and the idiot lights and anything else that only runs with ignition ON - which a 510 doesn't have much if anything else that does, hang on yes they do - blinks and reversing lights; check to see if they are working, if not the fuse could be the trouble.
On the models that DON'T have the steering lock and collapsible column, the coil etc. is hot wired via the ignition switch and believe it or not the car should start with #3 fuse removed and at the rpm the reg in the alternator fires the "IGN" idiot light should glow. Most of the time if you haven't got +12v at the coil with the ignition on but things like the lights, wipers & other high draw components are obviously working, then the fault is odds on to be the HOT contacts in the ignition switch itself which have porked it - proper prick of an arrangement but that's the way it is in our beloved 510 (~69 to mid 71). The accessories also run of the input to this feed, the switch then powers the accessories section of the fuse box and then of to the devices e.g. heater, wiper motor etc.
On the models that DO have the steering lock (mid 71 on) and the round type IGN key, the ignition feed (coil etc.) is via #3 fuse and if this is like your car, then i'd be checking that fuse and it's unlikely the fault is in the switch with these models.
I think I've given you enough to digest this time round, so have fun and fire away more questions if need be
regards
Terry
Did the usual stuff (points, etc) and checked the wiring to make sure that was all ok. The only thing I can think of this the starter relay is not allowing current to the coil and hence no spark.<snipped>Thanks a heap for the description. And no, it wasn't confusing at all.
Cheers
