The reason that it overheated was because in the 'open' position the
thermostat is providing a restrictor for the flow in the cooling system.
If u let the flow speed up too much by removing the whole thermo, the flow
thru the radiator is too fast to be effective. the water is cooled by
spending some time in the radiator ..the fins drag the heat out of the water
etc etc
