Deano,
Half cuts generally make for an easier conversion, it stands to
reason if you have every nut & bolt right next to your conversion.
I'm not going to tell you go for the FJ or Z18 as I believe it's
your choice and you prolly have a preference already, go for it
and as you chose it you can take the spoils - All of these engines
have their pros & cons, but of course we all have our preference -
also you didn't mention the SR as it's a great engine too albeit
imho a tad expensive in Aus.
On the RTA thing, it shouldn't make any difference to them which
engine you choose, they're all legal when the car is engineered
etc. to the standard for a legal turbo engine. It should be the
same for all of the engines and that's even for a L series with a
T03 hybrid hanging off it. Whether or not this happens in the
"real world" i can't say for sure but i haven't seen much evidence
in the ACT, the standard floats around a bit in Sydney for
whatever reason, but i'd be questioning the RTA or the engineer
dude who was telling me that a FJt requires bigger brakes and the
like than a Z18ET simply because the FJt has a reputation for
bigger hp. The extra weight of a FJt might be a consideration for
a higher standard of some components, but you'd have to be unlucky
to strike an engineer that new his datto facts & figures to that
degree.
regards,
Terry
