If the ballast resistor is burnt out, the motor will die when the ignition
switch is returned to the 'on' position.  This is because the ignition
switch, when in the start position, bypasses the ballast resistor (white
ceramic block next to the ignition coil) to supply full voltage to the
ignition coil for a hotter spark.  When the switch is returned to the on
position, power now runs throught the ballast resistor.  If it's burnt out,
no power to the coil, so that's why the motor dies.  I'll bet that's your
problem.
