My old 13b rx4 had the same problem. It was caused bu stuffed points in the
dizzy. If you are running a points dizzy then clean them and gap them or
replace with new contacts. If you have electronic dizzy then look elsewhere.
As far as electrical earths go, you can never trust an original loom. A
couple of years fitting stereo's for a living teaches you that. Find a patch
of chassi, sand it back and sink your earth to that.
