I'm surprised you remembered my suggested method gearbox crossmember
conversions.
To help new listers here it is again.
Fit the new gearbox under the car and lift it up until it has about 15mm
clearance from the top op the transmission tunnel. Bolt the original
gearbox cross member to the gearbox mount. You will now be able to tell how
far forward and higher the original cross member has to go to bolt into the
original holes each side of the tunnel. For a Stanza or Stumpy Skyline box
it is about 20mm up and about 20mm forward.
Mark places on cross member each side of the gearbox that the crossmember
can be cut through vertically.
Remove the crossmember. I use a metal cut off wheel to cut the cross member
through at the lines I marked under the car. Using the cutoff wheel means
the cross member is now in three bits. Use a piece of 2.8mm (1/8th inch)
mild steel plate cut two pieces about 150mm long and 10mm high, so that you
can place them vertically in the cuts made by the cutting disc.
Bolt the left and right hand sections of the crossmember to the body and the
centre section to the gearbox. Fit the 2 pieces of plate vertically in the
cuts. This should neatly replace the metal removed by the cutoff wheel.
You then tack weld each piece of the cross member to the two vertical plates
(Disconnect the alternator wires before welding). When you are happy that
the cross member is now one piece again, remove it and weld it properly
around each side of the plates. Grind or cut off all excess metal of the
vertical plates and paint well in subframe black. You now have a cross
member that bolt into its original body mounting points and gearbox mounting
points. To most observers it will look an original fitting.
