It's been done on the L series, not much room on the A though and it's not
pretty and we only did it on rally cars. We used the A/C holes on the
passenger side of an L to do it with an IR Alternator connected directly to
the battery. This was done in the days when a high output alternator was a
whopping 35-40 amps and there must be a better solution these days.

You could use a second battery to run the amp like a 4WD setup with an
isolator, bit of mucking about but you wouldn't flatten your car battery
with the huge amp. Most EFI Nissans have at least a 60 amp alternator which
should hold it reasonably well, like the amp flat out will pull 40 amps, but
driving you'd use less than half power (20 amps) and 2x100 watt lights pull
another 16 amps , ign (8-10 amps), poor battery. With that sort of draw I'd
be inclined to upgrade the piddly little battery wire with the fusible link
(rated at ~35-40 amps) in it to as it must nearly turn into a ciggie lighter
when that amp has been on for a while.

Jess,
I think a larger alternator from a skyline, late pulsar, or similar would
be a better solution. A second alternator would require a second regulator
and parallel wiring. You may also have voltage regulation problems. One for
the auto elecs on the list?

Hi list,
I am thinking about whether it is worth putting a second alternator on my
120Y Coupe/A-12 to run just the head unit and amp. What do you think of
this idea?
I have already got a second alternator, the reason i am considering this is
that the standard alternator does not produce enough amps to run
everything.
EG. The 2x100W driving lights, 2x250Watt amps, & heater.etc.
