Guys,

I finance expert I am certainly not, but I just spoke to some of the
wreckers here in Adelaide.

Adelaide Jap just said that the overall effect of the GST would vary - some
things up a bit, others down. But the main factor at the moment is the
exchange rate (Yen/$). Apparently this is really knocking things around,
with the effect being that we will be paying more. (by the way, they have no
HR33 wrecks - got one coming but they don't know when. They have one RB25DET
without turbo or manifold.). Adelaide Jap were never the cheapest guys
around but now it's just silly. They quoted me $4400 for SR20DET frontcuts
(if they had one) and $3410 for a bare engine and trans! I wish I'd have
bought up a few of these babies a few years ago - would have been a good
investment!!

I then spoke to a friend of mine who's in the import/wrecking game. He gave
basically the same story, but with more details. Apparently imported stuff
used to attract an import duty of 22% PLUS sales tax of varying rates (he
quoted 5 - 17.5%), depending on exactly what the item was. Now these are
both gone and they just pay a flat 10%. The net effect should be that bits
to the man on the street would be an average of approx. 3% cheaper -
although this is yet to be tried. Trouble is, the exchange rate blows
everything out of the water. He quoted a previous average exchange rate of
75Yen/AUD, but for their last shipment they only got 60Yen/AUD! Not good. I
just checked an online exchange calculator and the current rate is
63.8Yen/AUD so his figures would seem reasonable. I guess this means all the
yummy cheap 180SX's, Silvias etc. are about to become less competitively
priced too.
