Guys,
I've just been speaking to Craig Williams (Grand Poo-bah of the Adelaide
1600 Club) and he has managed to arrange an alternative plan for the
original date which was set for the National Rally (21st/22nd Oct 2000). He
has been fortunate enough to secure the picturesque grounds of the Birdwood
Motor Museum. This was the venue of the first ever Adelaide 1600 Club event
and IMHO is a very good one.
The coordination and finance involved with the original mega event got a bit
much, so he is going back to a more low key affair. It is more in keeping
with the theme of the first event we ever had at Birdwood - "A laid back day
for 510 enthusiasts", rather than a jam-packed Datto fest. It will be based
around a "Show 'n' Shine" type event on the Sunday, including various
support activities such as a " 'Plug Change Competition " - on some old
knackered "L" series heads (sponsored by "Heli-Coil" :) ), a "Turbo Toss"
competition etc...
Birdwood is in the Adelaide Hills, which means that wherever you are coming
from, you are in for a nice winding drive just to get there. Plus, you can
check out all the old beasties in the ever-growing Motor Museum. This has
actually grown to be quite an impressive collection.
There would also be a suburban Criuse on the Saturday night and one again to
the Birdwood Museum on the Sunday.
Cost would also be considerably less than for the originally planned mega
event. Probably in the $20 - $30 area.
Some entertaining options also currently exist for the Saturday too. The SA
Hillclimb Championship just happens to be on (both days) at Collingrove -
always an interesting event. And, depending on interest, a winery tour of
the Barossa Valley or Southern Vales regions could also be arranged for the
more laid back 510 drivers. A kinda cruise for the old buggers - I'll be
there!
Anyway, there is a Club meeting tomorrow night, so no doubt Zac will be able
to bring you more details on the Club Website as they come to hand. (Hope
you don't mind me posting this Zac - You know how much I love the Birdwood
events...).
I hope this might assist anyone who had made plans for the original event.
Sorry to keep changing things guys, but I think this one is for keeps!
Hope to see you there!
'later
Pete Liebig
