The input bearing is at the front of the gearbox, there isn't a main bearing as
such in a gearbox. if the gearbox growls in all gears except 4th (straight
thru) then the bearings most likely to be crook are the idler shaft. The noise
is usually pretty aweful when these are gone. If the growl goes away when you
depress the clutch then the throw out bearing may be the culprit. Another
bearing that can growl if it's shot is the spigot, this is a fairly distintive
screach rather than a growl so i wouldn't rate this high in probability.
