An A series gearbox is fairly easy to pull apart. You would replace all the
bearings in the box (some places like CBC will have a kit) but it is usually
just as easy and more economical to pick up another box. You might find a 5
speed from the Sunny wagon for ~$150 from a wrecker and I would think a
120Y/Sunny 4 speed box would be ~$100 these days.
The idler shaft or as it is also known as the lay gear has a bearing at each
end, one is located in the carrier plate and the other is in the casing
adjacent to the input shaft bearing. The lay gear passes through the carrier
plate and the reverse idler gear is located on the end and secured with a
circlip.
Pretty simple design these but if you've never pulled a gearbox down I'd
recommend that you find a friend who has to run you over the basics. I can
scan and send you the workshop pages direct for the 120Y 4 speed box
(tomorrow)

Sounds like you know what your talking about.
Where is the bearing on the idler shaft that you speak of?
Is it hard or expensive to replace?
TIA
Jess
