Nick,
Usually what happens is that an original sprocket is clamped to a new
undrilled one using a length of timing chain around the periphery to align
the two and the original sprocket is used as a drilling jig. I have seen a
25mm thick piece of tool steel drilled and then hardened  with this pattern
to use as an alignment device to drill the holes./ Seems to work well.

G'day,
I've seen a NISMO cam-sprocket in Errol's catalogue with ( from memory ) 8
different timing holes so that you could run your cam nil,3, 6, or 9
degrees advanced or retarded. The sprocket looks standard, probably from an
L24, with the extra holes machined in.
Stock cam sprockets have 3 holes to give adjustment for chain stretch.
Now,
Does anyone know where to drill the holes in the cam sprocket to get the
same sort of adjustability as the NISMO item?
For the small amount of work involved this should prove a worthwhile
modification, providing that the accuracy needed is within the scope of the
home workshop. i.e. one crankshaft degree is half a camshaft degree, so
you'd need to be able to centre punch and bore to one degree +/- one
quarter of a degree, I think.
