Cameron,
Check under the dash to see if any of the wiring is getting squashed when you are pushing the clutch pedal down !! This could be causing a short in the wiring.

I don't know of any specific reason for this to happen. You may want to check
power and earth contacts for the lights, might be loose. Also try replacing the
relay (if you have one) as when they get old they click on and off when rattled.
