Another way we used to do was to loosen the nut and leave it on (as below)
then hit the wheel alternately left and right with your hands and that used
to loosen them off.
Has always worked for me.

This method has always worked for me.

Place the steering wheel in the straight ahead
position. ( This way when you put it back it will be
where you left it) 

Sitting on the seat ( use a cushion or two if your
short) place your knees/thighs under the wheel.

Replace the steering wheel nut back onto the threaded
section by half a doz turns ( this prevents the wheel
hitting you in the face when it comes off)

Putting upward pressure fron your knees/thighs give a
short shap blow on the shaft using a metal drift (pref
brass) and a hammer ( dont hit the nut, you will stuff
it).

DONT  flog the shaft, as you will damage the
collapsable portion of the steering column.

It should pop of easy !!!
