Cameron, you're speedo will be reading about 5-10% high if you have the white drive 6x19 with a 3.9 diff. You have a couple of options; correct your speedo by adjusting the tensioner on the hair spring or fitting a 6x20 red drive. The 6x drive is the longer alloy type from a L6 box and not the shorter steel type from the 1600 box as these are the 5x drives and they don't fit in the FJ box. When you fit a new drive cog at the gearbox you will have to rotate the holder a little so the larger gear will mesh and then extend the retaining slot so the tag will fit back up and hold the retainer in place. The speedo symptoms suggest that the bearing where the cable connects into the speedo is worn which is typical of the trip metered 1600 type speedo and these will eventually fail as three of them have on me over the years.
