To take the strip off you have to do it really slowly. I used a small screw
driver under the lower edge and levered it off a little at a time. As you
said Malcolm if you are not careful it will bend and would be a pain to try
and get straight again.
They did make a right hand drive 2 door sedan in Japan as that is where mine
was imported from.
