I have a mate with a telstar that wanted better performance

Adam,

If you aren't afraid of an easy engine conversion you may want to consider the following:

How about this one: KC or KE Laser with an injected Mazda B6 Twin Cam in it?

Yeah, I know it's FWD, but if you can get over that, this is a sweet conversion, and you end up with a top little jigger that goes quite respectably. I've now done 2 of these.

If you get a Ghia you get a fair few mod cons too (for the year - '85 to '88 or so) - aircon, cloth trim, alloy whools, decent seats, tacho etc. , central locking, 4 wheel discs etc. etc.

The B6 Twincam has the same block as the standard Laser engine, and you can pick up a good B6 dirt cheap these days.

You should get a good Laser for $5000 to $7000, and the engine should cost around $1500 with everything.

Another (bigger, faster, but even cheaper) conversion candidate is the old model Ford Telstar. Sure, they're ugly as, but the Ghias are well equipped, and you can easily put an injected Mazda 2.0 FE Twin cam in them. These things really fly. We did one in my brother's Telstar and it is without doubt the best value-for-money conversion I've ever done. $1400 for engine with everything to make it go. Once again, same engine block as the standard engine. Pulls better down low than any modern twincam I've driven and revs cleanly to 7000rpm.

Either of these will give you outstanding fuel economy (that laser gets 45mpg on a trip running PULP) and give very respectable performance.

Hey Guys, I know this is a little off topic but it is car related (sorry if this annoys). Since petrol prices have risen soo friggin much in the last few weeks i have decided to get rid of my VR and get a 4cyclinder. My problem is I want a small car that is pretty powerful RWD etc... I would get another 1600, but i really want a later model car (just can't get past those creature comforts..hehe). I am only a uni student, so can't afford to spend any more than what i get for my VR. Anyone got any ideas? your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx guys Adam Ps sorry for the off topic post.
