You should get a good Laser for $5000 to $7000, and the engine should cost around $1500 with everything. Another (bigger, faster, but even cheaper) conversion candidate is the old model Ford Telstar. Sure, they're ugly as, but the Ghias are well equipped, and you can easily put an injected Mazda 2.0 FE Twin cam in them. These things really fly. We did one in my brother's Telstar and it is without doubt the best value-for-money conversion I've ever done. $1400 for engine with everything to make it go. Once again, same engine block as the standard engine. Pulls better down low than any modern twincam I've driven and revs cleanly to 7000rpm. Either of these will give you outstanding fuel economy (that laser gets 45mpg on a trip running PULP) and give very respectable performance.
