Andy,
Is the clutch adjusted correctly. You should have 3/4" free play at the top
and if you fully depress from 2 seconds the input shaft should be stationary
and reverse gear selectable without clashing. The take up point should be
around 1/3 total travel from the floor. Do you depress the clutch all the
way, and be careful to time the change. Beating synchros is easy if you're
out of sync.
Gearbox oil.
Interesting subject this, most Nissan gearboxes use fine splines and this
makes 90W/140 gearbox oil not suitable as the idle shaft gets out of sync
after being synced by the cones but before the next gear is engaged, so a
very slow change can cause as much damage as a flat change that's out of
phase. You should use no thicker than EPX 80W/90 in a Nissan box, everyone
has their favourite brand and some even use TQ Dexron III. There's a new
Castrol gear oil out a while back that I'm told is very good and formulated
for Aussie conditions whatever that means, it called VMX 80 and recommended
for the 280ZX gearbox.
You can read about it on the Castrol site.

I've not used this myself as I prefer Redline 75/90 NS, expensive but
brilliant in old Nissan gearboxes. With 80w/90 grade Castrol, 1-2 changes
with my dogleg box used to nearly take my arm off the snatch was so bad,
that's when it actually engage 2nd gear (:- especially if not quite up to
temp, since using Redline in the same box is a smooth as a babies even
in -10 degrees on a cold Canberra morning.

Subject: Gearbox oil.....
Dear list,
I just put in a 280ZX 5 speed behind my 2 litre. The gearbox crunches
really badly. The guy that sold it to me told me it was perfect when he had
it. When I quizzed one of his mates the other day he swore black and blue
that it never crunched. My last gearbox did the same thing.
Am I doing something wrong? Am I using the wrong oil? I don't have a 280ZX
book. Does anyone know what oil I should be running? I use standard, off
the shelf gearbox oil. What does everyone else do? Should I be running
engine oil or something? Does that effect gearchanges?
Thanks,
Andy.
