andrew,
wherever there needs welding, my panelbeater has tried to protect 
the areas of no access before the welding is done; ie rustproofing 
sections behind sills etc before welding up the repair etc. this 
extends to leaving holes (or drilling holes) for fish oiling after 
welding has been done so (hopefully) the "unseen" sections will 
remain rust free.
