zac,
a friend suggested that a davies-craig adjustable thermatic switch 
is available from places like repco/bursons etc for about $25. 
unsure of details but i presume you could wire it to the battery, 
then it could still turn on/off automatically even when car is off. (of 
course if you find you have probs with battery for whatever reason, 
hten it could be easily hooked into ignition)
