Errol et al,
Have just installed motor and G/box into Stanza (L20b
and B/Bird 5 spd.)
It doesn't fit...
Bugger isn't it.
The problem is similar to the Datsun 1600 & long
'box conversion that people have discussed on the list before.
It's much worse than a 1600
conversion.
I have the added problem that the crossmember won't
fit even if I reverse it, and the shift-lever hole will have to be
extended rearwards.
These are not major problems, the tailshaft that won't
fit is, however.
Shorten it, standard practice and not very
expensive.
I have 2 B/bird G'boxes already, so I don't want to go
and get a stumpy, unless someone wants to swap :)
You hit the best option here, a stumpy bolts straight in,
has standard H shift pattern and has better (for some hot L4's)
ratios too.
Also, I don't like the Stanza 5-Speed because it is
just the 4 speed ratios with an overdrive 5th - as far as I can
tell.
So do most of the L4 including Bluebird 910 S1&
S2 5 speeds, the S3 (CA20) which doesn't fit easily (bell housing
changeover req'd) is spaced more like the stumpy which is a L6 box from
the R30 2.4E
Are there factory tailshafts that will fit my new
setup, e.g Gazelle, 1200, Sunny etc...
Pass, unless anyone has some data on these it will cost
you a $1 to visit a pick-n-pull with a tape.
What
length are the modified 1600 tailshafts?
For this
combination a 1600 would use a 940mm shaft which is 130mm shorter than
standard. Stanza will use -130mm shaft, I can't recall how long a Stanza
shaft is but just measure yours (centre uni to centre
uni)
Failing that I'll have to get mine shortened.
Probably unless you're very lucky - nothing that short
comes to mind from another model.
What do you counsel?
Regards,
Nick
