Michael,
The NSW RTA code of practice for modifying light vehicles is comprehensive
and indicative of what most states will accept, here is the link. Most
suspension modifications can be road engineered if done right, they're a bit
funny about sticking 6 litre V8 engines in a 510 but you can get them
engineered as well with a lot of hassle.

On bumpers, I'm sure there are laws about the point of contact on the front
of a vehicle and one of the ways of passing this law (could be an ADR) is to
fit bumpers or a bull bar. The rear I recall is possibly not a problem as
I'm sure we could remove them on the rally cars but we could never totally
remove the front bar, remember rally cars have to be registered and also
comply with CAMS laws. I'm sure you'll find out the hard and expensive way
what the law is and says (and the penalty $$$) if you take your front bar
off and take a drive down town on a Friday night.

Ive been wondering, how much can be done to a car and still be
engineered? I mean can you cut the front and rear suspension out , tube
frame it and put custom suspension? Can it be engineered for road use?
Also is it possible to run a 1600 without bumpers at all? Or is that
just looking for trouble. (both my bumpers are wrecked and it would look
better without them)
thanx
Michael
