Hi Ben,
I have a 1968 1000 wagon. I met
you some time ago, I used to
live in Oatley I had a white 1600. Anyway, I put a 120Y motor and gearbox into my 1000 wagon about 6 months ago, Its a pretty easy job. Though a 1200 A12 will go in easier. To fit the 120y version you need to make\modify the engine mounts, whereas the 1200 version A12 will go in on the original mounts. To make the 120y gearbox fit, I had to create some extra clearance for the clutch fork, which will hit the bottom of the firewall. I banged a dent with a big hammer, I think I also had to cut a small square out, about an inch square, so I could fully engage the clutch. I used the the original 1000 gearbox crossmember. The shifter whole lined up perfectly. I also used the 120y clutch cable for some reason. Actually
another thing comes to mind now, I remember that I
used the original 1000 alternator, which died shortly after. I had to muck around to switch over to the 120y alternator (the 120y alternator mounts on the opposite side, so it was just a matter of extending some wires and using a different alt-bracket). All in all it was a pretty basic swap that you could do in a weekend, and with 63 horsepower on tap your 1000 will almost lift its front wheels when you drop the clutch! (well almost) As for
fitting 120y front disks I would like to get some parts to
try it myself, A friend of mine fitted some 120y rotors with sigma calipers to a 1000 coupe, but I haven't had a close look. I suspect his was done by fabricating a caliper mount, I'm not sure. This is definately a swap thats worth looking into, because standard 1000 drum brakes are dodgy! I've driven mine down bulli pass a few times, and its really scary by the time you get to the last few corners.. Good luck, let us know how you go with
it.
James Empson.
