Thomas,
The smoke could be the turbo or the engine or a combination of both, its hard to
say without looking at it.The noise the turbo makes is probably the bearings and
this is probably the cause of the smoke as the seals tend to go when the
bearings are shot. The Cordias use a TC05 Mitsi turbo which are fairly easy to
rebuild depending on the condition.A common problem with the TC range is that
when the bearings wear out the rear piston ring type seal can spin in the
bearing housing causing unrepairable damage.Replacement cartriges are around
$1500 new which includes turbine and compressor wheels. The bearing housings are
not sold as a seperate item as far as I know.I've usually been able to find a
good second hand bearing housing for around $100.If the bearings are really bad
you might find that the wheels have been scraping on the insides of the
housing. If you pull it apart yourself you need to make some custom circlip
pliers out of long nose pliers and you'll need some large circlip pliers to
remove the comp housing. When you remove the exhaust you will probably notice
oil in the turbine housing, this is an indication that the rear seal is
stuffed.I would sugest that $500 being about the minimum price even if you do
abit of the work youself. Take the car to a turbo workshop and see what they
have to say before carrying out any work. Good luck.
