Anthony,
The head will be fine this time but that's about all that it can be machined
without using head savers. Head savers are shims that go under the cam
pedestals to return them to a height that retains the chain within spec. You
don't have a problem though, your head has had around 1/8" removed but this
is quite normal for it's age. A87 heads are still plentiful at wreckers and
don't cost very much these days (~$50 - $100 complete) but 20 years ago this
was a very different situation so head savers were more common then. To be
sure you seek the advise of the person who is going to do the valve work for
you. When you are ready to put the head back together, I recommend that you
use a monotorque head gasket. These are good Aussie technology (Made in
Tassie) and are available from Repco.

regards
Terry

Subject: Re: A87 Head & Machining

I have checked and the letters are visible but there is little bits missing
from the bottom of the letters, maybe a millimeters worth, is too badly
gone?

Is the head usable with these head savers you spoke of?
But more likely if it can I won't be able to drive it hard so I guess
that'll mean I will need a new head right?

And so how much is a second-hand A87 head and where are they moost readily
available from ?
Sorry for the questions but I am in urgent need of advice before I get the
valves recut/reground tomorow.

Cheers & Fears,
Anthony
