Richard,
We did exactly the same thing on Brad's daily (before
some clown rear ended him at 80kph in a TRUCK and
wrote it off) a few years ago.
It came up a treat, we actually used bog to fill the
cracks to make it smooth, before recovering it.
I would just like to add that a heat gun was benifical
to help it fit tighter and look smoooooth.
