I have been working through all the same bits with a similar problem on a
Mazda 1600cc engine. Basically its running lean at part throttle and
backfires when cool. It runs very well at full throttle. I eventually took
it to a local tuning shop who could only find the (new) air filter was a bit
restricted. ($99 thank you) He concluded like I had that basically LRP fuel
now available is not as good as previously, and the carb secondary jet needs
to be slightly enlarged to compensate.
I would still look for a fuel starving cause.
