I've just had a RWC report on a 1600 I am about
to reregister. It needs a new idler arm according to my friendly
local Licensed Road Worthy Certificate garage. My local Repco man says
"no probs", $100 plus for a newie or $16 for a pair of replacement
bushes to rebuild the original. What is the list recommendation,
new idler arm or replacement bushes? If bushes are the go, what is the
trick to removing the old ones?
My RWC man is a very hard marker, one of the
reasons I use him. He wants new lower ball joints (no discernable
movement), replace the rear slave cylinders (which were new last year and have
done NIL miles - so much for cheap imported brake parts), new uni
joints ("they're just about to loosen up"), new rubbers through the anti
sway bay (fair enough), then he says this 1600
is the best early 70's car he's seen for years! - so it should
be as it only done 83000 miles from new! - I use him as he's always a
hard tester and the cars are always totally trouble free for years after his
RWC, plus our local Motor Reg takes one look at who did the
roadworthy examination, then only checks the numbers. I get away
with no engineers cert. for replacement seats and runners, modified gearbox
crossmembers, bigger brakes, L20 engine.
I'd forgotten what a prick of a job fitting stock
rear brake slave cyls. is. Rear discs aren't far away for this car.
And having to pull the exhaust off to drop the tailshaft! - What
was Mr Datsun thinking when he designed the original auto exhaust
system. I hope it corrodes soon so I can fit a proper one that allows the
tailshaft to drop with out touching the exhaust.
