Andrew,

Pretty cirtain it'll be the alternator. Your other gauges are working aren't 
they as the fuse that runs the gauges also trips the alternator.

Someone offered an alternator to you in an earlier post, i suggest you should 
borrow it and fit it to see what happens and then make a decision as you'll sus 
the problem by process of elimination. If your Lucas was the internal reg type 
then it's a piece of cake with a Bosch as the wiring is exactly the same (from 
memory?)
