Chris,
Yes they should be very close to symmetrical. It usually means a problem if they're not, a component could be bent (you should have be told) or it was aligned badly. The tell tale sign is if an idler is "frozen" I'd get it checked by someone else if you don't know what you're looking at. Your description of not feeling right also indicates a problem - if the toe is out of whack or a tie rod is frozen, then when you hit a bump (even mild) the behaviour will be very unpredictable.

Should the Threaded parts in the steering rack assembly be completely symmetrical?
 
As my steering does not feel quite right and I notices that one of the threaded bars is screwed out far further than the other.
 
It has just had a wheel alignment, has this been done to compensate for a bent steering component?
