Craig,
In my opinion 2 x 40mm DCOE's are fine for a mild L18 as either twin 40's or
45's would be choked down to 36mm or 38mm anyway. 45's have a certain
prestige factor attached to them and the most delightful induction noise
you'll ever hear but really very little in the way of extra performance over
40's so I'd see what comes up and go from there. The manifold that you get
will give you more in the way of driveable power especially if it's port
matched eg Datrally. Tuned headers are fine eg HM21RC, again not much in the
way of increased performance over the cast SSS manifold but they sound
great. 2.25" exhaust is also fine for either size but use good quality
mufflers. I like Walkers mainly because they are not too exy, flow
reasonably well and have a good life span in my climate (Canberra which is
cold and we get a lot of condensation which kills cheap mufflers) so I guess
I'm saying I've found them to be good value for money. There are other good
ones out there (I've also had good life out of Rapid and to a lesser extent
Lukey) that do the job in the medium price range.

A couple of things to consider:
With DCOE's more often than not you'll need to budget in a dizzy re-curve as
you don't usually run a vacuum advance unit with them, although with some
engines you can get away without having to do this.

If you can't get a set that's pretty much setup then ppl that know how to
tune them are getting rare.
Parts for webers are exy and a little hard to find if you're not in a cap
city.

regards
Terry

Subject: carbies

list,
i'm looking to upgrade my carbies from SU's to Webers soon. i've got an L18,
medium street cam (powerband 3000-6500rpm), and ported and polished. i'm not
sure whether to get twin sidedraft 40s or 45s (would 45s be too much carb
for the engine?). i also want to put extractors on. should i do this first
before changing the carbies? and if so will a 2 and a quarter inch exhaust
be enough.
any help you can give would be appreciated.
craig
