Sounds like it might work. A while ago there was an oil cooler avail, which connected inline with the lower radiator hose for the same kind of effect. Some 6cyl nissans also run a 'sandwich style' water cooler between the block and the oil- filter I've seen these on certain Maxima's and basically they run water to cool between the filter and engine.
