Paul,

You have fairly classic symptoms of a voltage reg or brush failure. If it's a Bosch you can replace the reg and brushes in one go.

Subject: Regulator overloading?

List,

I seem to have a problem with my alternator or regulator or something.  When I have the aircon and... and I hit the brakes the electrical system goes into a weird state... when it's idling it shows it is charging slightly, but if I switch on accessories it will show current is draining from the battery, and the higher the revs, the less it will charge...  it seems the regulator is only putting out a maximum current, and it is needing current from the battery to work.   To get out of this mode I have to switch all the accessories and drop the revs off... the ammetre will then jump up to a higher charge current, and when I switch accessories on the regulator can handle everything again, and keep charging the battery.

What I'm thinking it is is that I am overloading the regulator and it is going into an overheated state...  would it be a stuffed regulator, or would it have something to do with the brakes...  it has only started doing it since I took the Datto down to Sydney and ran the aircon for most of the day.

Paul
